How to Use the Portable Leeb Hardness Tester?

Posted on June 4, 2022

Introduction

A portable Leeb hardness tester is used to measure the hardness of different metals by applying the Equotip otherwise known as the Leeb rebound hardness measurement method. The tests are conducted in accordance with the ISO 16859 and ASTM A956 standards. These testers can measure the hardness by employing all the hardness scales. In contrast to this, there is another choice namely the Benchtop hardness testers. These are often used in the fixed position by applying the Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell, or Shore hardness testing methods.

For compactness and convenience, you can use the modern and advanced portable hardness Leeb testers. You can check out our CES-410 model, which is one of the most sought after and one of the Best Portable Leeb Hardness Tester available on our website.

Best Portable Hardness Tester - CES-410

The Working Principle of Portable Leeb Hardness Tester

The device is made using the Dynamic Leeb principle. According to the principle,

“The hardness value is derived from the energy loss of a defined impact body after impacting on a metal sample.”

The Portable Leeb hardness test is conducted using the Rebound method. In the rebound method, the Hardness Leeb value (HL) is determined by first finding the rebound velocity ( VR) & the impact velocity (VI). Afterward, we take their proportion and multiply it by 1000.

HL= (VR / VI) * 1000

How to Use the Portable Leeb Hardness Tester

The portable Leeb hardness tester comes in three parts viz.

  1. The main instrument
  2. The Probe
  3. The hardness block

The instrument is in the digital format that contains different functionality switches and a digital display that shows all the necessary information. Then there is a probe that is used to detect the hard

ness result by using the Rebound method. And there is a block of metal sample used for hardness testing. Get the Best Portable Leeb Hardness Tester from our website now!

N.B. This method can only be applied if the metal sample meets the specific size and weight requirements needed for the test.

Procedure:

  • First, we need to calibrate the instrument using a material block whose hardness is known.
  • After the calibration, we need to set the appropriate settings in the instrument like the material choice, the hardness scale, probe direction, etc.
  • Then we need to make three consecutive tests using the impact device on the metal surface. Note that the direction needs to be the same as used in the settings.
  • After taking the three readings, the average reading is calculated. The final result is achieved with a +/- display error range. (the error range and accuracy varies with the instrument brand as well as model)
  • In this way, we can calculate the hardness of a metal block.
  • There are mainly 7 types of hardness testing methods viz. HLC, HLD, HLDL, HLD+15, HLE, HLG, and HLS. These are identified using the factors like impact velocities, the shape of the indenter, and the material type of the impact unit.

Key Takeaways

  • A portable Leeb hardness tester is used to measure the hardness of different metals by applying the Equotip also known as the Leeb rebound hardness measurement method.
  • It works on the dynamic Leeb principle which states that: “The hardness value is derived from the energy loss of a defined impact body after impacting on a metal sample.”
  • The Hardness Leeb value (HL) is determined by first finding the rebound velocity ( VR) & the impact velocity (VI). Afterward we take their proportion and multiply it by 1000.
  • The portable Leeb hardness tester comes in three parts The main instrument, The Probe, and the hardness block.
  • To find out the hardness, we need to first calibrate the instrument then take three consecutive tests of the sample block.
  • Then an average is found out, which is the hardness of the sample block. The actual result differs by a +/- display error range.
