Caltech India is the manufacturer and supplier of CES 577 Falling Block Impact Tester. The Falling Block Impact Tester is a precision laboratory instrument designed for determining the impact resistance of paints, varnishes, protective coatings and related coating systems using the falling-weight impact principle. The instrument is designed for testing in accordance with the requirements of BS 3900-E3 – Methods of Test for Paints: Impact (Falling Weight) Resistance. The test evaluates the ability of a coated test panel to withstand a sudden mechanical impact without excessive cracking, detachment, flaking or other visible coating failure. BS 3900-E3 describes a method for determining the impact resistance of both single-coat films and multi-coat paint systems.
Falling Block Impact Tester is used to conduct the test of coating resistance from impact when it is dropped from a certain height. It is designed according to BS 3900 E3. The Block is allowed to fall from a certain height and the damage caused on the coating is evaluated on the basis of adhesion, flexibility, deformability after impact testing. The Falling block impact tester is used in Automobile, Steel & Pipe, Paints and coating Industry etc.
In the falling-weight impact test, a coated metal test panel is securely positioned on the supporting anvil/receiver of the instrument. A specified weight is raised to a predetermined height and released so that it falls freely onto an indenter positioned over the coated test specimen.
The falling weight produces a controlled impact and localized deformation of the test panel and coating. After the impact, the coating is visually examined for signs of failure such as:
- Cracking
- Flaking
- Peeling
- Delamination
- Loss of adhesion
- Other visible coating damage
The impact energy can be related to the mass of the falling weight and its drop height, allowing coating performance to be compared under controlled test conditions.
